Woman Scammed for $5K While Trying to Get $50K

The woman withdrew $5,000 from her bank and gave it to two women who promised her a share of money found in an envelope.

A woman at 1. S. Harlem was bilked out of $5,000 March 27 when she was trying to get a share of money supposedly found in an envelope.

Police said a woman sitting on a bench started a conversation with the victim and then showed her an envelope with a large amount of money. She then took out a note that said the person to find the envelope could keep the money, but only if they sent $10,000 to another person.

The offender suggested they both send money to an unknown person, and they could split the money in the envelope. The victim was told her share would be $50,000. The victim and the other woman got into a car parked at Dunkin Donuts, with another person.

They went into a nearby CVS after suggesting they verify the money was real, and they assured the victim it was. After getting $5,000 from US Bank, the victim gave the money to the offenders. They drove her back to CVS and said the manager had her share of the money.

The victim went inside alone and the offenders were gone when she returned. She gave police a limited description of the offenders and said they were in a gray four-door car.
