FRANKFORT, IL — When the Lincoln-Way East varsity football team wraps up its season this fall, it will be the last for Coach Rob Zvonar, who has led the team since its inception at Lincoln-Way East.
Zvonar is the first and only head football coach in the history of the Griffins, the District shared. He has led the team for 26 seasons.
The District told Patch Zvonar has led the team to 261 career victories, six state championship appearances and three state championships.
To honor his coaching dedication, Lincoln-Way East has named its football field after him. Coach Rob Zvonar Field was dedicated at a football game earlier this month.
"But perhaps one of his most remarkable accomplishments is one that speaks to consistency, preparation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence: Lincoln-Way East football has reached the playoffs in every season of its existence," the District shared during the football game. "That is an accomplishment that belongs to the Griffins alone."
Zvonar himself is also an IHSFCA Hall of Famer, a recipient of the Randy Walker Power of Influence Award, and has earned numerous Coach of the Year honors throughout his career.
"But Coach Z's impact goes far beyond wins, championships, and awards," the District shared in a statement. "Nearly 100 Lincoln-Way East football players have earned Academic All-State recognition under his leadership, demonstrating that success in this program has never been measured solely by what happens on Friday nights."
"Coach Z has built a climate of excellence and a culture of winning — both on and off the field. He has challenged his players to become better athletes, better students, better teammates, and, most importantly, better people," the District added.
Lincoln-Way East is currently playing in the IHSA Class 8A playoffs. The team will play in the first round next week.
