Bike Sharing Program Proposed For Frankfort

A sponsor is sought to help jumpstart a program where bicyclists can rent bikes along the Old Plank Road Trail.

FRANKFORT, IL -- A bike sharing service has been proposed for the Old Plank Road Trail in Frankfort as a bike repair station has already been recommended for approval.

The village of Frankfort Community Services Committee agreed to add a bike repair station near Breidert Green Park in downtown Frankfort near one of the entrances to the trail, according to a report from the Daily Southtown. The repair station will cost about $1,000 and include a rack to lift the bike off the ground.

"It would be a great amenity to be able to make minor repairs," Interim Village Administrator Rob Piscia said.

The bike sharing service idea was offered by Zagster, an east coast company that has similar services in other small towns across the country. As opposed to the Divvy program in Chicago where bike renters can return the bikes to any station, this program would just be for those who can rent and return the bikes to one location in downtown Frankfort.

It will cost $10,000 to complete, and Mayor Jim Holland has already indicated the village would not agree to pay the entire amount.

Instead, Zagster has called for a major sponsor to get the effort off and running.

"People everywhere are clamoring for this," a Zagster spokesman said.
