The Frankfort Area Historical Society invites the community to experience downtown Frankfort in a whole new way during its upcoming Historic Building Walking Tour on Saturday, June 6.
This immersive guided tour will take guests along Kansas Street while uncovering the fascinating stories behind eight historic buildings and landmarks that helped shape Frankfort over the last 150+ years. Beginning at the FAHS Museum at 132 Kansas Street, participants will hear tales of devastating fires, booming businesses, railroad expansion, daring robberies, and the resilient community spirit that transformed a small railroad stop into the vibrant town we know today.
Among the highlights are stories surrounding the legendary Grainery fires, the mysterious 1899 bank robbery involving notorious “yeggmen,” the evolution of the Old Plank Road Trail, and the enduring significance of Frankfort’s iconic Water Tower. Guests will also learn how many historic buildings were rebuilt multiple times after fires threatened the growing village, offering a fascinating glimpse into the determination and perseverance of Frankfort’s early residents.
The tour combines local storytelling, architecture, humor, and historical insight to create an engaging experience for both longtime residents and first-time visitors alike. Small group sizes ensure everyone can comfortably hear and enjoy the presentation while exploring the streets where Frankfort’s history unfolded.
