Students honoring veterans and raising funds for Honor Flight Chicago

Hickory Creek Middle School seventh grade students will hold a special Veterans Day observance on Friday, November 10, at 8:30 a.m. at the school at 22150 116th Avenue. Veterans from the community are welcome to join the students in the audience as they listen to guest speakers. Veterans wishing to speak about their service to our country are also welcome to do so. Veterans can RSVP to Tonia Gatsios at the school at 815-469-4474.

During the program, the students will acknowledge veterans to thank them for their service and invite them to join them for a photo following the ceremony. The JROTC cadets from Lincoln-Way East High School will also perform a flag-raising ceremony in honor of our veterans. Students have been competing to raise money for Honor Flight Chicago, a not-for-profit organization that brings World War II veterans to Washington, DC for a day of honor at no cost to them. During the assembly, students will present a check to Honor Flight Chicago with the funds raised. The students and veterans will also see a re-enactment of the children’s story “America’s White Table” by Margot Theis Raven presented by the seventh grade staff.
