Calling all Veterans!

Local area veterans invited to be honored by District 157-C students and staff

Frankfort School District 157-C students will again honor veterans through special Veterans Day programs on Wednesday, November 11. Local veterans from the community are welcome and invited to attend the events at all the schools.

The Frankfort 157-C Tiger Band, together with the Village of Frankfort, the community and Veterans groups, have partnered to present a Veterans Day concert on November 11. This FREE concert is intended to honor all Veterans and begins at 6:30 p.m. at Hickory Creek Middle School, 22150 116th Avenue in Frankfort. The Veterans Day Observation will be presented at 7:00 p.m. by the Tiger Band in cooperation with the Village of Frankfort and Mayor Jim Holland. The program will include a color guard presentation, patriotic songs and recognition of local veterans in attendance. The Band Booster organization will have coffee and desserts available for a donation, and all veterans will receive a free dessert. The band will also be running fundraiser tickets at $5 each or five for $20. They have exciting raffle prizes this year including Chicago Blackhawks tickets, Chicago Bulls tickets and an Apple watch. A portion of the proceeds will go to the school’s Honor Flight Campaign. Honor Flight paper stars will be available for $1 which will allow purchasers to honor a veteran.

Hickory Creek Middle School seventh grade students will hold a special Veterans Day observance at 8:00 a.m. at the school at 22150 116th Avenue. Veterans from the community are welcome to join the students as they listen to guest speakers. The students will acknowledge the veterans to thank them for their service and invite them to join them for a photo following the ceremony. Students have been competing to raise money for Honor Flight Chicago, a not-for-profit organization that brings World War II veterans to Washington, DC for a day of honor at no cost to them. During the assembly, students will present a check to Honor Flight Chicago with the funds raised. The students and veterans will also see a re-enactment of the children’s story “America’s White Table” by Margot Theis Raven presented by the seventh grade staff.

Grand Prairie Elementary School at 10480 W. Nebraska will host an all-school Veterans Day assembly with a performance by second graders at 9:15 a.m. and all veterans are welcome to attend. A second grade Cub Scout Troop will present the color guard salute and a slide show will be presented with video clips of children reading their writing. In addition, the school is also collecting items to send overseas to the troops.

Chelsea students and staff will be hosting a Veteran’s Day assembly at 9:30 a.m.at the school at 22265 S. 80th Avenue. Veterans that are family members of students and staff are invited to attend the celebration honoring the contributions made to our country by military personnel. The celebration will begin with the scouts presenting the colors and leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Everyone will participate in singing the National Anthem and the veterans will be honored by having the theme songs from each of the military branches sung to them by the students. The students and staff will be creating a display of pictures of friends and relatives that are service men and women. Chelsea School is also hosting a Popsicle Sale to raise money to send care packages to those currently serving our country.
