Chelsea Elementary School third through fifth grade students and staff hosted an assembly to honor veterans on Veterans Day, November 11. Prior to the event, the students learned what it means to be a veteran and the importance of their commitment and service to our country.
Veterans that were family members of students and staff were invited to attend the celebration honoring the contributions made to our country by military personnel. Some 100 local area veterans registered to attend the assembly and many students and staff wore patriotic red, white and blue clothing during the program. Tables of treats and desserts baked by Chelsea staff and parents were offered to the veterans before and after the assembly. They were also given a listing of numerous items being given out free to veterans by local area businesses. These included a free car wash, free oil change, free haircut and numerous or reduced priced meals at various restaurants.
The celebration began with Girl Scout Troop 297 and Cub Scout Pack 270 presenting the colors and leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Everyone participated in singing the National Anthem. Songs were sung by the third grade chorus under the direction of Tracey Lazzo and students also sang by grade level. The veterans were asked to stand to be recognized and students sang the theme songs from each of the military branches. Following a moment of silence, in concluding the assembly teacher Linda Newman stated, “Veterans, we cannot thank you enough for coming today. You are continuing to serve by helping us teach our students the value of our veterans and their service.”

The students and staff also created a display of pictures of friends and relatives who are service men and women. The display was arranged on a wall in the shape of a map of the United States. Chelsea School is also hosting a Popsicle Sale to raise money to send care packages to those currently serving our country.
