FRANKFORT, IL — Clad in an orange jumpsuit, Frankfort mom Corie Walsh appeared in Will County court on Monday for a hearing on prosecutors’ requests for documents from Walgreens, Silver Cross Hospital, Silver Oaks Behavioral Hospital and the Will County Adult Detention Facility.

Attorney Andrea Lyon stood with her arm around Walsh during the hearing as the 40-year-old mother of four stands accused in the hanging death of the 2-year-old, also known as "Bear."

Lyon maintains that Walsh was suffering from psychosis at the time of Barrett’s death. Walsh is represented by Chicago criminal defense attorneys Lyon and Robert Kerr.

"This morning we are continuing to investigate thoroughly so that we can learn everything we can about her and her psychosis," Lyon said.

Lyon reiterated her desire to see Walsh hospitalized, rather than remaining in jail, saying, "The death of little Bear is an unimaginable tragedy."

"Psychosis is not a choice; it's a health issue that deserves compassion," Kerr said.

Walsh is accused of killing 2-year-old Barrett and making statements about harming her other children and her husband, who was out of town at the time of the toddler’s death. Her other three children, including an 8-month-old baby, were found unharmed after a neighbor discovered Barrett hanging in the basement of the family’s Frankfort home, police said.

Prosecutors alleged that Walsh said she intended to harm her husband when he arrived home by "poison(ing) him with a drink." Authorities have said Walsh had drinks at the home as well as a number of prescription bottles.

"We are getting prepared to defend her to the best of our ability," Kerr said. "Corie deserves a thorough investigation."

Last month, Walsh entered a plea of not guilty. She has remained in custody at the Will County Adult Detention Facility since Sept. 4, three days after her son's death.

Lyon has expressed concerns about the mental health care Walsh may be receiving in the Will County jail.

Several of Walsh’s relatives, including her mother, were in court for the Monday morning hearing, with some of them visibly crying at the start of court proceedings and later embracing outside the courtroom. Her husband was not in the courtroom Monday, but Lyon said he fully supports her.

Walsh is due back in court on Nov. 23.
