Advance registration is required and provides participants with a supply of bait and hooks, along with a T-shirt and a snack of juice and goldfish crackers. Residents pay a $3 per child fee; non-residents pay $10 per child.

"We use the pier and then we also clear some areas by the edge of the pond so it's safe for everyone and lines don't get tangled," Canino said. However, no chairs are allowed on the pier.

Typically, about 100 kids attend the derby, which is held rain or shine. A parent or guardian must accompany any youth. Participants need to bring their own poles, too.

"I think the most fun thing about the day is seeing the kids who have never done this before, and they're so excited when they catch their first fish. And when they win, they're so thrilled," Canino said.

The registration form is available on the village's website or at the , 432 W. Nebraska Street. The derby is 100 percent catch and release, according to the Canino. Additional derby rules can be found on the form.

Check in for 3-7 year olds begins at 7:30 a.m. with fishing from 8-8:45 a.m.  Check in for 8-12 year olds is at 8:30 a.m. with fishing from 9:30-10:15 a.m.
