Grand Prairie Elementary School celebrates Red Ribbon Week
DEA helicopter lands on school grounds to add to the celebration
Red Ribbon Week at Grand Prairie Elementary School was extra exciting this year due to a special visit by members of the Chicago Field Division of the Drug Enforcement Administration. The DEA Team spoke to the students about the importance of making healthy choices, landed a helicopter in the school’s back field, provided a canine exhibition and gave the children a look inside their Special Tactics van and police car. Students also received ribbons, pencils and stickers given by the DEA Team.
Throughout their Red Ribbon Week celebration, Grand Prairie students dressed in themed clothing to display their commitment to being drug free. The campaign incorporated a different theme each day to celebrate what it means to make positive, fun and healthy choices. The themes included children wearing their favorite pajamas to school on “Put Drugs to Sleep” day, their favorite character shirt for the theme of “My Character Shines - I’m Drug Free,” their favorite team shirt to “Team Up Against Drugs” and crazy socks day to show their commitment to “Socking it to Drugs!” The culmination of the week was dressing in Halloween costume to “Say Boo to Drugs.”
The Red Ribbon Week nationwide program reaches millions of young people each year and stresses the importance of staying drug free and making healthy life decisions that impact us on both a personal and social level.
