Grand Prairie students celebrate Dr. Seuss

A highlight of the event had Hickory Creek Student Council members reading to first graders

Red striped hats, curly blue wigs and children’s books could be seen everywhere at Grand Prairie Elementary School recently as the first grade students celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

The students were fortunate to have the Hickory Creek Middle School Student Council members come and read to the first grade students and some kindergarten classrooms. All 45 Student Council members from sixth, seventh and eighth grade were excited to share the love of reading with the younger students. Some of the Hickory Creek students brought their own picture books to share while others read from classroom favorites. The first grade and kindergarten students really enjoyed listening to the older kids read aloud. Some of the children were even able to listen to their older sibling read to their class.

In the morning, the first grade students had a dress rehearsal of their Dr. Seuss Musical for the kindergarten and second grade students. They sang songs and taught the audience a little about Dr. Seuss. Grand Prairie Principal Eileen Nelson and teacher Lindsay Reipsa read the popular Dr. Seuss book “Green Eggs and Ham” to all of the first grade students in the gym after the rehearsal. The children enjoyed being together as a grade level.

Each community had Dr. Seuss activities that the children completed as well. Then it was time for their parents to come and enjoy the Dr. Seuss Musical. It was a fun-filled Dr. Seuss day and the children couldn’t believe how quickly the day went.
