Haines Elementary Teacher & School Nurse Honored For Saving Student's Life

The New Lenox Fire Protection District honored two Haines Elementary school officials with the district’s Life Saver Award for coming to the aid of a student when his heart stopped.

On the morning of November 19, a 7-year-old second-grader collapsed during his gym class. He had never had any issues in gym prior to this day, but when his teacher, Ellen Cooke, ran to help him he was unresponsive.

Cooke immediately called the school nurse, Christine Goeppner, who grabbed a defibrillator and headed to the gym. Cooke and Goeppner administered CPR and used the AED to restart the young boy’s heart while others called 911 and kept the students calm.

“We want to say thank you to everyone involved in helping to save the life of the child, but especially to Ellen Cooke and Christine Goeppner,” said Fire Chief Jon Mead. “It is because of their quick thinking and knowledge of what to do in this type of situation that we were able to achieve a great outcome for the family. We are proud to give them both our Life Saver Award, they truly deserve it.”
