Hickory Creek Middle School students earn awards for economics posters

Nick Signore earned a 1st place, Olivia Jacobs earned a 2nd place and Kristina Winter earned a 3rd place award.

Three Hickory Creek Middle School eighth grade students earned awards in the Econ Illinois Economics Poster Contest. Students Nick Signore earned a 1st place award, Olivia Jacobs earned a 2nd place award and Kristina Winter earned a 3rd place award. The program is sponsored by the Office of Economic Education at Governors State University.

Illinois teachers of grades 1-8 use the poster contest to stimulate students’ interest in the fundamentals of our economic system. Each year, students gain a better understanding of the economic system through their participation in this competition. Students learn a basic economic concept and then use their creativity and art skills to demonstrate their understanding of the concept in a colorful drawing. Teachers submit their entries to a regional contest in which twenty-four winners are selected. Entries are judged on originality, creativity and accuracy of concept.

The twenty-four winning entries from each regional contest advance to the state competition from which twelve drawings are selected as state winners. The twelve state winners' drawings are featured in a twelve-month calendar the following school year. At both the regional and state levels, winning students receive monetary awards and certificates. Teachers also receive recognition. Hickory Creek Middle School participating teachers included Michelle Sommer, Karen Ryan, Korinne Johnson and Michele Hardy.
