Hickory Creek Middle School students earn state recognition for writing
Thirteen students earn recognition out of over 5,000 entries nationwide

Thirteen Hickory Creek Middle School eighth grade students in the Honors English Language Arts classes of teachers Diane Haas, Michelle Sommer and Cheryl Wojnarowski earned state recognition in the 2015-2016 Letters About Literature program sponsored by the Library of Congress. With over 5,000 entries nationwide, 2,500 7th and 8th grade entries, there were 271 semi-finalists and 39 finalists.
Letters About Literature is a national reading program of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress for students in grades 4-12. Students are asked to read a book, poem or speech and write to the author (living or dead) about how the book affected them personally. Letters are judged on state and national levels by a panel that includes authors, publishers, librarians and educators from all 50 states. The Hickory Creek Middle School finalists included Elizabeth Co, Joe O’Sullivan and Trent Troeger. The Hickory Creek Middle School semi-finalists included Meghan Baker, Mackenzie Brady, Ben Chillon, Brett Gardner, Alex Jansen, Claire Kassitas, Maggie Murphy, Caitlin Nelligan, Aria Puri and Veronica Szafoni.
