Hickory Creek students earn awards in economic concepts contest

The top 12 statewide winners and 12 honorable mention winners in the state are recognized with awards and featured in an annual calendar

Five Hickory Creek Middle School eighth grade students earned awards in the Econ Illinois Economic Concepts Poster Contest. They participated in an awards reception that took place on May 9 at the University of St. Francis.

The Econ Illinois annual Economic Concepts Poster Contest challenges students to use their imaginations and creativity, as well as their own life experiences, to visualize an economic concept and turn it into a colorful illustration. The contest, which is intended to ignite creativity and promote critical thinking, was designed to help students better understand and interpret the economic world around them.

Students learn one or more economic concept and use their creativity and art skills to demonstrate their understanding of the concept in a colorful drawing. Teachers submit their entries to their regional center for judging. Up to 24 entries from each region are recognized and move on to the state-level competition. The top 12 statewide winners and 12 honorable mention winners in the state are recognized with awards and featured in an annual calendar.

The following Hickory Creek Middle School eighth grade students were recognized. Lyndsey Golaszewski earned first place in state, second place in region. Rachel Miller earned an honorable mention at state, first place in region. Haley Bishop earned third place in region. Sydney Whitemiller earned third place in region. Sophia Barnard earned an honorable mention. Hickory Creek teacher Michelle Sommer sponsored the students in their efforts.
