Lincoln-Way North Sends Off 400 Graduates

More than 400 students graduated from Lincoln-Way North High School in a special commencement ceremony held at the school’s stadium on June 5.

Valedictorian David Arnold and salutatorian Alison DeBruyn led the Class of 2015 on to the stadium field as North musicians played “Land of Hope and Glory” by Elgar.

North Principal Dr. Mark Cohen commended students for their many academic accomplishments and strong character.

“The seniors seated before me have been the engine that has driven Lincoln-Way North’s accomplishments,” Cohen said. “Every trophy that has been earned, every accolade bestowed and every honor awarded has been the result of their leadership, strength and sacrifice.”

“From the first day of school to the last, the members of the Class of 2015 have been an example of character and class,” Cohen said. “If you pursue your dreams and your future with the same passion you have demonstrated here these last four years, there will be no stopping your rise to the top.”

The National Anthem was sung by seniors Pamela Doody, Casey Sawilchik and Maddie Witt.

In the valedictorian’s address, Arnold reflected on the positive memories made at Lincoln-Way North and encouraged his classmates to embrace life’s challenges.

“This is a wonderful occasion, as just like the Phoenix, today we are reborn, heading into an exciting future,” Arnold said.

“I will never forget winning the state title in marching band for four consecutive years,” Arnold said. “Whether it’s watching football games on Friday nights or bring thrilled during pep assemblies, I hope each of you can remember a time when you felt connected as a community and as a school.”

Class President Payton Lang shared her hopes for the Class of 2105.

“I hope that you have learned how to set and reach goals, how to form meaningful relationships, how to learn, and most importantly how to be the best version of yourself,” Lang said.

“I hope that you have the chance to embrace your parents and thank them for all of their sacrifices,” Lang said. “Even though you worked extremely hard to get here, your parents have worked even harder.”

District 210 Superintendent Dr. R. Scott Tingley addressed the members of the Class of 2015 stating, “To the young men and women in front of me this evening, your best years are ahead of you, as most likely are your greatest challenges.”

“It is my sincere hope that your experiences at Lincoln-Way have prepared you for all of life’s challenges and successes that will certainly come your way,” Dr. Tingley said.

Board of Education Vice President Dee Molinare congratulated the graduates on behalf of the board and shared a few words of advice.

“Like yourself. Make choices that allow you to lay your head on your pillow each night with a clear conscience,” Molinare said. “And wake up the next day happy to see yourself. If you like yourself, others will see that and respond to you.”

Just prior to the ceremony, members of the senior class presented the district and Board of Education with a class gift. Students gifted Lincoln-Way North with landscaping and a walk-way near the field house. The plantings include evergreens, flowering shrubs, and ornamental grasses, as well as perennials and annual flowers to match the school colors.

The gift was purchased with proceeds from candy sales and other fundraisers.
