LW East Exemplary Student Research Program Concludes Project

Students worked alongside Argonne Scientist Dr. Tianpin Wu preparing and testing their iron supplement samples.

FRANKFORT, IL — The Lincoln-Way East Exemplary Student Research Program team has concluded their year- long research project with Argonne National Laboratory. The district said this project began in August with Lincoln-Way East being paired up with an Argonne beamline scientist based on their proposal for an experiment.

The team of eight was selected from approximately 70 applicants who declared they want to pursue a career in science. The school said the project examined the degradation of iron supplements. Students worked alongside Argonne Scientist Dr. Tianpin Wu (Senior APS User in Sector 9BM) preparing and testing their iron supplement samples. They conducted tests using the particle accelerator, the Advanced Photon Source.

The students presented their project on May 7 to APS scientists at Argonne and about 100 other doctoral, post-doctoral, and professional scientists, and the other seven high school teams. The district said the project will be in the 2019 catalog of projects for Argonne National Laboratory because the project yielded conclusive results.
