LW East Science Club Takes Home Gold Medals At Competition

The competition was held at Sandburg High School in Orland Park, and was attended by 12 schools.

FRANKFORT, IL — The Lincoln-Way East Science Club took home several gold medals after the Southwest Suburban Conference science competition. The competition was held at Sandburg High School in Orland Park, and was attended by 12 schools.

Club sponsor and science teacher Benjamin Voliva said the club has 95 members, and club members are allowed to remain in the club even if they have other commitments, as long as they attend 60 percent of the meetings.

Voliva said the science club led the field in total medal count at the competition.

The awards at the competition were:

  • Jacob Shalabi- gold medal in titration
  • Lauren Booth - silver medal in titration
  • The team of Terrence Ducksworth and Mohammed Kazi - gold medal in genetics.
  • The team of Joe Hauser and Sawyer Eaton- Bronze medal in hovercraft
  • The team of Evan Rafol, Jacob Shalabi, and Sawyer Eaton - Silver medal in Tower Building
  • The team of Dylan Ingram and Ryan Workowski for Silver medal in the mousetrap car

The club held preliminary competitions to decide who would represent the school at the main competition, Voliva said.

"I am proud to be a part of this team/club and the science department of LWE. I credit our department chairperson, Maria Wilson, for fostering an atmosphere of exploring science in every way possible for a high school student," Voliva said. "Additionally, she makes sure that all obstacles are clear for teachers and students in order to make this happen."
