Mayoral Candidate Todd Morgan calls for Frankfort to put term limits question on April 4 ballot

Mayoral candidate Todd Morgan has drafted an ordinance that he will be submitting to the current Village of Frankfort Board asking them to place term limits for Village officials on the April 4, 2017 ballot for consideration by the voters.

Morgan stated, “While implementing term limits is one of my campaign goals if I am elected, there is no reason why this can't be placed on the ballot in the upcoming election for our community’s consideration. There is plenty of time for the current board to bring my proposal to committee for review and, if approved, forward to the board for final approval prior to this year's election."

He hopes the current board will give strong consideration to his proposal and evaluate it on the basis of what is good for the entire community. He continued, “Today there is a growing sense, especially in our state, that term limits can play an effective role in avoiding cronyism or ‘old boy’ networks where politicians become too powerful or have special interests that keep them in office.”

Morgan feels that term limits would provide an open platform for allowing all of the talented individuals in Frankfort an opportunity to serve on the board and not have to amass a campaign "war chest" or form allegiances. Morgan said, “As Frankfort grows we need fresh ideas and new energy to help support our position in the region. All too often people become lethargic and just ‘mail it in’ and I don't want that to happen here. I believe that this is an idea that’s time has come and if I am unsuccessful in getting it placed on the upcoming ballot, it will be one of the first things that I propose as the newly-elected Mayor. The only opposition some may see to the proposal is it doesn't favor long-time elected officials.”

Morgan is calling for a two-term limit for both the Mayor and Village Trustee positions but would support three terms if the citizens of Frankfort feel it is more appropriate. He continued, “In my conversations with the community, I can see that term limits are high on their list. So having a healthy discussion to hear where our current Village officials stand on the issue only makes sense.”

Morgan will be proposing that his ordinance be discussed in full at the upcoming Land Use & Policy Committee meeting scheduled for January 11th and hopes that people will contact the Frankfort Village Board in support by using the form on the “contact us” section of the Village website at www.villageoffrankfort.com or calling 815-469-2177. Candidate Todd Morgan may be contacted at 815-464-1730 or Morganformayor2017@gmail.com.
