Are residents interested in Lake Michigan water for Frankfort?

Mayoral candidate Todd Morgan wants to keep a close eye on recent developments geared to bringing a new source of Lake Michigan Water to the south side and possibly Frankfort. Morgan feels that recent news of a proposed study being launched by 11 neighboring communities to bring Lake Michigan water via a route originating in Hammond could have significant benefits for Frankfort. Morgan stated, “I just want to make sure we are following this development being investigated by other communities. I believe we should conduct our own study as to how this idea to bring Lake Michigan water via Hammond could benefit Frankfort and whether our community members might be interested in pursuing it.

Morgan believes this might be Frankfort’s last chance of ever finding a feasible way to bring Lake Michigan water to the community and wants to make sure that proper due diligence is done well in advance to consider its possibility. He stated, “Since the Village of Frankfort passed on the opportunity to get Lake Michigan water when Mokena tapped into it several years ago, maybe this new proposal has merit for Frankfort residents to consider.”

While this opportunity is still years away and may not prove to be the answer for Frankfort, Morgan thinks the time is right to prepare as a community to make an informed decision if the opportunity arises. Morgan’s plan calls for a careful monitoring of the developments being undertaken by the neighboring 11 municipalities involved in the study and developing a plan to measure Frankfort citizens’ interest. Morgan said, “This is obviously not the first time Lake Michigan water has been discussed, but it's probably going to be the last. Currently the Village of Frankfort operates on a well system and with our growth, more and more people have expressed an interest in obtaining a better source of water.”

Morgan said that his initial understanding of the proposal is that the goal is to provide Lake Michigan water at a much lower cost long term than any current supply coming out of Chicago. Morgan continued, “While many discussions need to be held regarding these recent proposals being undertaken in other communities, I just want to make sure Frankfort is ahead of the curve in communicating with our citizens so that we all share in the ultimate decision.”
