McDermed Offering Free U.S. Citizenship Application Help

State Rep. Margo McDermed is hosting a workshop to help legal immigrants with their U.S. Citizenship Application

If you or someone you know is a legal resident interested in taking the major step of becoming a citizen of the United States, State Representative Margo McDermed (R-Mokena) is hosting a workshop to help with the application. The workshop is being held with the help of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and its partners. Volunteers will be on hand to help assist applicants in completing the necessary forms and documents.

“Navigating the citizenship process can be difficult, we want to help make the process easier for legal immigrants,” Rep McDermed said. “Immigration is what this country was founded on and our welcoming communities will continue to be one of the foundations of this country. This event has been successful in the past and I’m glad to be able to continue to provide this opportunity and help to those that need it.”

The workshop will be held at the New Lenox Public Library on Saturday, August 17th beginning at 10:00 a.m. and running until everyone has been helped. To be eligible for citizenship you must be a legal permanent resident of the United States for at least 5 years, or if married to a U.S. citizen, for 3 years. Applicants are advised to bring the required documents with them to the workshop. These items are listed at Representative McDermed’s website or on the flier located at a number of local businesses and organizations.
