New Lenox VFW Allowed to Have Big, Bright New Sign

"This sign is the same as the American Legion sign that you gave permission to use," a VFW quartermaster argued in a letter to the board.

What's good for the American Legion is good for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, at least as far as signs in New Lenox go.

The village board voted during its Monday night meeting to allow the VFW to erect a 40-inch-by-96-inch electric sign.

"This sign is the same as the American Legion sign that you gave permission to use," Larry Paveza, the quartermaster of Harry E. Anderson VFW Post 9545, wrote in a Nov. 19 letter to the board.

During the meeting, a man named Bill Walter emerged from the audience and told the board that the VFW sought input about the sign from those living near the 323 Old Hickory Road building.

"We had contacted all the residents around and sent them certified letters," Walter said. Residents living in the vicinity of the VFW did not raise any objections to the sign, Walter said.

In his letter, Paveza said the VFW "would use the sign to advertise our Friday Fish Fry, Tuesday Night Bingo and Hall for rent plus many other local events."

"We need to advertise our location," the letter said. "People do not know that we are here in New Lenox."
