Three Questions with Mamma Mia's Dillon Ruzich

We caught up with LWE junior Dillon Ruzich , who is busy rehearsing for the upcoming LWE production of Mamma Mia! April 12-14. Tickets are on sale now at lwemusic.org ABBA's hits tell the hilarious story of a young woman's search for her birth father. This sunny and funny tale unfolds on a Greek island paradise. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter's quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother's past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.

Mamma Mia! is a fun, glittery, dance-pop musical, but we were able to chat with Dillon a bit about the character he plays and the work he's put into the show.

1). Sky had recently fled from a negative experience regarding his occupation. Is he satisfied with his new life with Sophie on the island, or would he rather be back where he started?

- Surprisingly, neither. Although living in the Taverna with the Sheridan's is a paradise, Sky has always wanted to travel the world and will not let that dream fade. His plan is to one day embark on an adventure with Sophie at his side.

2). Why is Sky so willing to do whatever Sophie wants?

-Sky recognizes that the island and Greek life is all that Sophie has ever known. With the craziness of a white wedding, Sophie faces new problems she has never had to deal with before and as a learning opportunity for Sophie, Sky lets her take the lead with this on her own. However, once things get out of hand ( and believe me, they do ) Sky is forced to say no to his fiancee. He loves her, and inevitably gives in to Sophies "shenanigans".

3). Was it difficult playing an older role with experiences you haven’t had yet , or not ?

-Definitely. Trying to connect Sky abandoning a part of himself for his fiance for a life he isn't fully passionate about to my young life as a teenager was a challenge. However, I tried overcoming this by studying the character and talking with Nicole Zralka ( Sophie ) on how to make the relationship behind Sophie and Sky feel real.

4). Whats next?

-Well, I'm currently looking for a summer job ( as any normal kid ) and in July, I will be studying theater at Yale University.

5). Who is Sophie's Dad?

-In the end, it doesn't truly matter because Sophie accepts Sam, Harry, and Bill as all of her dads. However, through out the show, Sam is seen stepping up to the role of "father" and seems to have the largest natural connection to Sophie. Therefore, I'd say Sam.
