Village Lays Out Road Resurfacing Plan: Is Your Street Affected?

Work to upgrade some of the village's streets should begin in mid-July and run through August. Check out the map to see which roadways will be getting work done.

It's the Catch-22 of street maintanence: No one likes bumpy, cracked and pothole-filled roads. But no one wants to deal with the inconvenience that can happen when work crews hit the streets to do their business.

In the next two weeks, however, construction teams will begin work in various parts of the community to resurface streets as part of the normal course of the village's maintanence work, said Terry Kestel, director of Frankfort's Public Works Department.

Last week, the approved the program, and D Construction, the contractor handling the resurfacing, should begin work in mid-July and complete the project by Aug. 31, Kestel said. Restoration work, like landscaping in certain areas, could run until Sept. 13, he added.

The cost of the project is a little more than $915,000, which has already been budgeted. And because the project takes advantage of the state's Motor Fund Taxes, the Illinois Department of Transportation needs to sign off on it before work can start, Kestel said.

Although this type of project is fairly routine, Kestel said one aspect of the 2012 resurfacing program does present a unique problem: tackling Kansas Street without disrupting downtown businesses or events. In fact, village staff and the contractors discussed this issue late last week, figuring out the best approach to resurface that stretch of road, Kestel said. Barring bad weahter or unforseen circumstances, workers will use the limited window during summer events—from Monday through Wednesday—to do the resurfacing job quickly and with as little disturbance to the local shops as possible, he added.
