1920s Historical Fiction Meets Contemporary Rom-Com
A Geneva native's haunting yet humorous novel pays homage to sweet home Chicago.
It’s the year 2000, and twenty-four-year-old Kate moves into a new apartment to find a new state of independence in a new millennium. A former 1920s hotel, Camden Court has housed many lonely lives over the decades—and is where a number of them have come to die. They’re not all resting in peace, however, including ninety-year-old Olive, who dropped dead in Kate’s apartment. As Olive continues to make her presence known, a Jazz Age tragedy haunts Kate’s modern love life.
Now writing women’s fiction under a pen name, Rumer Haven began her professional career in finance, living and working in the city of Chicago until earning her Master of Education degree from DePaul University. She then returned to the west suburbs to teach English at the secondary school level, completing her student-teaching at Geneva High School and accepting a full-time position at St. Charles North High School. Originally from Bartlett, IL, Haven lived in Geneva before relocating to the UK in 2008, where she has continued to nurture her love of literature as a fiction writer and freelance editor. Seven for a Secret is her debut novel, published in 2014 by Omnific Publishing and distributed by Simon & Schuster. This story is the author’s Valentine to the home she hails from, featuring old Chicago haunts from Lincoln Park’s Bourgeois Pig Café and Biograph Theater to Uptown’s Green Mill jazz club and Aragon Ballroom. There is also mention of an estate in Geneva that is loosely based on the Fabyan villa and grounds.
With a little supernatural and a lotta’ razzle-dazzle, Seven for a Secret is where historical fiction meets contemporary rom-com—from the Roaring Twenties when the “New Woman” was born, to the modern Noughties when she really came of age.
