6 Weapons Found In House Of Geneva Man With Revoked Valid FOID: Police

The man legally bought the guns in Arizona, where he also resides, and brought them back to Illinois, according to a police report.

GENEVA, IL — A Geneva man, whose Firearm Owners Identification was previously revoked, was found in possession of six handguns, two rifles and nearly 1,770 rounds of ammunition, according to police.

Police were dispatched in the evening on July 24 to a residence in the 200 block of Hawley Lane for a welfare check after the caller reported the house's garage was left open, with brake lights illuminated on the car parked inside. No one was inside either of the cars in the garage, according to a police report obtained by Patch.

One of the responding officers, upon looking up the car's owner, found he had a revoked FOID card.

The two officers proceeded to approach the front door of the house, which had lights on, when they spotted a man, identified as 62-year-old Brian Foley. After indicating they were police, the man held up one finger to say "one moment" and stepped away. This prompted the officers to back away from the house until the man returned, according to the report.

When Foley returned to partially open the door, officers observed he held a gun in his left hand behind his back. When police confirmed he held the weapon, they pointed their service weapons at him and retreated, ordering him to drop the fully loaded gun, documents show.

Foley was subsequently arrested and later charged with six counts of possession of firearm while FOID card is revoked and one count of illegal possession of ammunition without FOID card.

When asked at the station why he brought a gun to the door, the man told police he "did not know who was at his front door, especially at this time of night." He said he heard yelling but couldn't make out what was being said, according to the report.

Foley also told police he was aware his FOID was revoked but bought the gun in Arizona, where he owns a house and spends half his year, according to the report, and brought it back to Illinois since he "had to have one for home defense," he told officers.

Once the man was taken to the Geneva Police Department, officers obtained a search permit and returned to the house and located an additional three handguns, one AR-15-style rifle and one AK-47-style rifle. Police also found an assortment of ammunition totaling 1,766 rounds, documents state.
