911 Call of Car Crash Where 2 Men Drowned Played in Court

A 911 call played at a sentencing hearing Thursday showed that the last thing two men heard as they drowned in a car was there own screams.

Sajaad Syed, 21, of Naperville, and Mihirtej Boddupalli, 21, of Lisle, died in July 2014 after the vehicle they were in crashed through a fence, went down an embankment and into a quarry lake, according to a report from the Chicago Tribune.

The recording of the 911 call was played in court Thursday.

"People are screaming! It's sinking — it's sinking!" a woman said in the call, according to the Tribune.

The driver of the car, Michael Szot, of Geneva, was sentenced to one year in jail with work release and four years of probation. He was also ordered to perform 200 hours of community service, according to the Daily Herald. In addition to the community service, Szot will have to submit to monthly drug tests and wear an alcohol monitoring bracelet on his ankle.

Szot, 23, was charged with nine counts of aggravated DUIfor the incident. Police said that Szot had been drinking heavily, his blood-alcohol level was reportedly twice the legal limit, and smoking marijuana the night of the crash. They also said he made no attempt to save his friends and at one point told police he was not driving.
