The first case was confirmed in August, when officials said a Kane County resident who was unvaccinated against measles had traveled internationally.

The first case resulted in up to 1,600 potential exposures, requiring KCHD to identify and notify people who may have been exposed and provide guidance to help prevent further spread.

Potential exposure locations included Kaneland High School in Maple Park and Next Generation Pediatric Clinic in South Elgin.

The person connected to the first case was no longer infectious as of Aug. 25.

Officials said being exposed to measles does not mean a person contracted measles. Depending on vaccination status and circumstances, people may be asked to monitor for symptoms, provide documentation of immunity or quarantine.

Symptoms of measles may include:

Those who develop symptoms and believe they may have been exposed to measles should stay home and call their healthcare provider before going to a medical facility. They should not go to an emergency department, urgent care or other healthcare facility without calling ahead.

The Kane County Health Department is in the process of reaching out to people who were in contact with the second case to provide quarantine guidelines.
