GENEVA, IL — Before the Union Pacific Railroad bridge can be replaced in Geneva, a pre-construction phase is scheduled to begin next week, if weather permits.
In 2027, the Kane County Division of Transportation will demolish the existing 18-span bridge south of Route 38 to construct three new single-span bridges over Reed Road, the Union Pacific Railroad and White's Creek.
The project will also include the addition of a third striped lane, traffic signal modernization, a multi-use path, storm sewer replacement, a detention pond, retaining walls and landscape restoration.
Before the multitude of tasks can begin, the center median on Kirk Road north of East State Street will be removed, and temporary pavement will be installed, Geneva officials shared in a news release.
The pre-stage construction is expected to last about four weeks. Temporary daily lane closures will be required, and flaggers will be stationed to direct traffic through the work zone. Crews will generally work from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
During the main portion of construction next year, Kirk Road will remain open, but drivers should anticipate lane closures and delays, particularly during work hours.
