City Looks at Adding Tax for Food, Beverage at Geneva Restaurants

Geneva aldermen voted down a sales tax increase last week. A places for eating tax is now being considered.

GENEVA, IL - Geneva aldermen last week decided against asking voters to increase the city’s sale tax, by placing a referendum question on the April ballot, and has instead requested city officials look into implementing a tax on food and beverages at restaurants in town, the Daily Herald reports.

Alderman Tom Simonian said he decided against the .5 percent sales tax increase, which would bring the tax up to 8 percent in Geneva, when he learned the Geneva Public Library is pursuing a referendum and will be requesting money to construct a new building, according to the article.

"It's difficult enough to swallow one (tax increase)," Simonian said, of the likelihood voters would approve both requests.
