Digital Documentation Of Geneva Streets Begins To Support Infrastructure Master Plan

A comprehensive pavement assessment of municipally owned streets is underway in Geneva.

GENEVA, IL — Cars with roof-mounted sensors will be driving around Geneva this week as the city creates a digital record of all municipally maintained streets.

Geneva's comprehensive pavement assessment began at 8 a.m. Wednesday and is expected to last until 5 p.m. Friday, weather permitting.

For the three days, residents may spot Cyvl vehicles, equipped with sensors similar to Google Maps cars, driving through neighborhoods. The contractor is creating a digital record of all streets maintained by the city. No state or county highways will be included.

The technology identifies and inventories roadway features and flags potential safety issues. The report will give the city an objective picture of its road network without requiring manual inspections.

The index will aid in the city's new integrated infrastructure master plan, which aims to coordinate long-term street and water improvements for the next decade and beyond. City staff will use the data to help prioritize budgeting for short and long-term capital project planning, officials said.
