El Molcajete State Street Closes, Owner Focuses On Third Street

Many customers were going to the Mexican restaurant's Third Street location, so the owners decided not to pay double rent.

GENEVA, IL — The El Molcajete restaurant on State Street in Geneva has closed, according to reports, so owners can concentrate on their Third Street location.

The State Street location lasted eight years, but co-owner Isaias Gomez said customers are going to the Third Street location, on the second story of the Berry House, so "we decided not to pay double rent," the Kane County Chronicle reported.

The Berry House location, which has been open for four years, is especially busy on weekends when customers wait a half hour to be seated, the Chronicle reported Gomez as saying. It has 45 tables and can accommodate a party of 40, a capability the State Street location did not have.

“We have an extra room here [on Third Street] that we used for private events,” Gomez said, according to the Chronicle. “We added 12 tables to that room, and we are planning to make it upscale. We are working on a special menu for it.”

The private event room will be called the Tequila Room and will feature exotic margaritas.
