GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Forest Preserves District is seeking volunteers to run tours at its popular Fabyan Windmill in Geneva, the Kane County Chronicle reports.
There are currently nine volunteers assisting with weekend shifts at the windmill but the forest preserve district needs 18, head miller Mark Rivecco told the Kane County Chronicle. The lack of volunteers forced the windmill to close this past Sunday afternoon for the first time in a dozen years.

Docents at the windmill, which is located within the Fabyan Forest Preserve in Geneva, lead visitors on tours, which are available from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sunday starting in May and continuing through October, according to the forest preserve district’s website. Volunteers would take tour groups through the windmill, demonstrate how the mill runs and/or greet visitors as a host on scheduled weekends and some weekdays. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least two to three days each month for a three- to four-hour shift.
Volunteers are required to attend the Volunteer Orientation and will receive hands-on training at the windmill. More information on the Fabyan Windmill, as well as information on how you can sign up to volunteer, can be found on the Kane County Forest Preserve District website.
