UPDATE: Batavia Electrical Fire Ends in $45,000 Damages Thursday

One occupant had trouble at first trying to escape the fire. Here are the details on what happened and pictures from the scene.

An electrical fire on Thursday caused about $45,000 worth of damages to an apartment complex on Batavia's west side.

The responded to a report of a building filling with smoke and an occupant unable to see to escape, according to a press release.

The fire broke out on the 100 block of North Mallory Street in Batavia. Fire crews were dispatched to the scene at 11:06 a.m. Thursday, the release said.

The first fire vehicle on the scene reported visible smoke coming from the building's roof and doors.

Fire attack crews found the fire to be in the rear of the building in a hallway used as an exit from a first-floor apartment.

Search and Rescue

As the fire attack crews searched for the fire, other fire crews checked the apartments for trapped victims. None were found.

Although one resident had trouble escaping at first, all occupants made it out of the house safely. A woman initially called 911 saying she could not escape the building because of the smoke, according to scanner reports.

The fire department also found and removed an uninjured cat from an upstairs apartment.

Smoke detectors activated and alerted the residents to the fire.

Afterward

The fire was first under control at 11:25 a.m. and ultimately extinguished. The smoke was removed from the building using large fans.

The origin of the fire was in a rear hallway at the base of a wall.

The cause of the fire was electrical, the press release said.

Structural damages were estimated at $35,000 and damage of contents was estimated at $10,000.

A total of 32 personnel were on scene, with the first unit arriving at 11:10 a.m. Thursday. The last unit was cleared at 1:57 p.m.
