GENEVA, IL — Labor Day is a week in the past. Marking the unofficial end of summer, it was a time for many to go on one last warm getaway before the weather begins to chill. What did that mean for gas prices? In Illinois, they continued declining.
As of Monday, the average price for a gallon of gas in Illinois was $4.01. That's the lowest it's been all summer — down 11 cents from last week and 30 cents from a month ago, according to AAA.
At around $4.01 per gallon in Kane County, gas prices were on par with the state average. Nationally, the price per gallon of gas remains below $4 for an average of $3.71 Monday — a level not seen since the beginning of last March, AAA says.

As summer nears its end, AAA predicts prices in some parts of the country could fall below $3.
"Less expensive oil usually leads to less expensive gas for drivers," said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson. "This trend has helped pump prices fall steadily for three straight months and, with fall approaching, more markets could soon see prices below $3 per gallon."
