Geneva Fire Hydrants To Be Flushed In The Spring

GENEVA, IL — As part of an ongoing maintenance program, fire hydrants throughout Geneva will be flushed starting April 11 and continue for three weeks.

From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, fire hydrants will be flushed throughout town, and residents will be notified when the process arrives in their neighborhood. If weather permits, the Public Works Department's work is expected to be complete in late April.

Flushing helps improve the overall quality of water by cleaning the water mains of rust and corrosion. The process also helps ensure hydrants are properly working.

During the process, Geneva officials said water is safe to drink, but residents should let their faucets run for a few minutes if there's any discoloration in the water.

Residents are also asked to limit their water use if possible and hold off on washing clothes to avoid staining from rusty water. If clothes do get discolored, officials said residents should keep their laundry wet and buy rust-removing solution packets.
