Geneva High Football Season Opener is Friday Against West Aurora

Veteran Geneva coach Rob Wicinski is expecting his team to make it to the playoffs again this year.

Veteran Geneva coach Rob Wicinski is not quite sure what to expect from his team this season.

”You know, it’s funny,” Wicinski told the Kane County Chronicle. “This could be one of my best teams, it could be one of my worst teams. I’ve got good football players. I don’t have any superstars, but I’ve got good football players. Every year, you need some guys to pop. Like juniors to seniors. Like linemen that have never played. If we get some victories here, I think it’ll be more of a program type of a win rather than just, ‘Hey, I’ve got these superstars,’ you know. But we’ll see.”

Geneva will face West Aurora High School Friday in its season opener. Kick off is at 7:30 p.m.

Vikings’ players to watch this year include Stephen Kemp at defensive tackle, the Chicago Tribune reports. Kemp is described as fast, strong and the type of player “who can create havoc with opposing offenses.”

“I think I definitely surprise people on the line with my speed,” Kemp told the Chicago Tribune. “I have experience and good instincts in finding the ball and I don’t give up on plays.”

Geneva’s starting quarterback, Sean Chambers, will also start on defense as a safety. He is headed to Princeton next year where he will play defense, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Last year, Geneva made it to the quarterfinals in the Class 7A playoffs where they lost 44-26 to Cary-Grove. Even though Geneva lost some key players from last year’s team, Wicinski said he still expects the Vikings to make it to the playoffs again this year, according to the article.

Meanwhile, the Daily Herald reports that “not a lot of high school football teams will out-athlete West Aurora.” Senior running back and linebacker Drake Spears was offered a scholarship by the University of Illinois the spring of his sophomore year while junior running back-linebacker DaQuan Cross lead the Blackhawks last year with 677 yards rushing, 42 tackles and 561 yards, according to the article.

Blackhawks coach Nate Eimer called his three-year starting quarterback, Jonathan Doyle, “the toughest kid I’ve coached in 10 years,” the Daily Herald reports.

High School Cube will air the Geneva vs. West Aurora game live Friday evening and you can watch below. The pre-game will start at 5 p.m. with the game to follow.
