Geneva Ice Cream Scooper Headed to Hollywood for Debut on 'American Idol'

Kayla Mickelsen, a senior at Geneva High School, will be performing in the upcoming season of American Idol.

Kayla Mickelsen has been staying busy in the weeks leading up to her debut on American Idol.

The self-described “weird, nature-loving energetic vegan” had her “dreams come true” on Jan 8. when she learned she would be headed to Hollywood after getting the nod of approval from American Idol judges at her audition in San Francisco. A couple days after that, the Geneva High Senior headed to Nashville to record a cover of “Lean On” by Major Lazer with a fellow American Idol competitor, Kelsie Watts.

Somewhere in between all of that, the 18-year-old was also supposed to return to the tri-cities to perform a couple songs with Jeffery Austin, a St. Charles native who recently made it to the finals of The Voice, at the Arcada but her flight was delayed and she wasn’t able to make it.

Auditions are wrapping up this week and Hollywood Week kicks off next Wednesday on the popular reality TV show. The show will air on Fox Wednesday and Thursday starting at 7 p.m.

Until then, there is plenty of time to check out some of Mickelson’s past performances--we’ve included some of them below. And she has been providing plenty of updates on social media: You can follow her on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

And you can expect that many in the area will be rooting for her. Graham’s Chocolates in Geneva, where Mickelson works as an “ice cream scooper,” has been showing its support through posts on its Facebook page.
