Geneva Named 'Tree City USA' For 22nd Time

GENEVA, IL — For the 22nd time, Geneva has been named a "Tree City USA" due to its commitment to effective urban forest management, officials announced Wednesday.

This spring, officials also announced they're planning to plant at least 95 new parkway trees throughout the city.

In order to receive the honor from the Arbor Day Foundation, Geneva has to meet criteria, including maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, observing Arbor Day, and spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, officials said.

Along with the Tree City USA designation, Geneva was awarded Arbor Day Foundation's Growth Award. The award recognizes major milestones and activities that build a sustainable forestry program, according to a news release.

The inaugural award was given to municipalities based on forestry funding, staffing and training; measuring tree inventory; urban planning; planting and protecting parkway trees; and community involvement.

One of the events that helps raise money to plant trees throughout Geneva is the city's Wine, Cheese & Trees fundraiser, which took place virtually in February this year. The event is hosted by Geneva's Natural Resources Committee and the Geneva Park District Foundation.
