Girls all over Batavia will be screaming for Zack Borrego this weekend when he takes on the iconic role of Conrad Birdie in Spotlight Youth Theater’s production of Bye Bye Birdie at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre. The 15-year old Geneva High School freshman is no stranger to the stage. This is his twelfth show with Spotlight Youth Theater. Conrad Birdie, he says, is his favorite role. Bye Bye Birde is set in the 1950s and as Conrad Birdie, Zack plays a fictional Elvis-like character who visits the town of Sweet Apple, Ohio to bestow one last kiss on an adoring fan before he enters the army. A talented musician and performer, Zack brings charm, charisma, and a healthy dose of humility to his role. On playing a teen idol, Zack says, “it’s fun seeing all the girls [on stage] going crazy, but off stage they say, ‘Aw, it’s just Zack.’” Zack has been a music student for most of his life. He has been studying piano for eleven years, is a member of the Varsity Choir at GHS and hopes to have a future as a pianist and composer, perhaps even attending his dream college: Julliard. Audience members will love to see this fun-loving teenager really strut his stuff on stage. He’ll have you toe-tappin’ and finger-snappin’ right along with him as he sings your favorites, including “Honestly Sincere” and “One Last Kiss.” But, when Zack sings his favorite song, “A Lot of Livin’ to do,” you’ll know that, indeed, this talented and Christ-centered young man certainly does.
Aurora’s Spotlight Youth Theater offers numerous classes, and puts on three fully produced professional quality shows a year. The group, whose purpose statement is “Reflecting Christ through the performing arts”, stresses community as well as excellence.
