Heat Forces Two St. Charles Middle Schools to Close Early Monday

After-school activities were also cancelled at Haines and Thompson middle schools.

Haines and Thompson middle schools closed early Monday due to the heat and humidity, according to a St. Charles School District 303 press release.

Classes at the schools were dismissed at 1 p.m. After school activities were also cancelled.

The schools are the only buildings in the district that do not have air conditioning, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Students and staff at the school were rotated into air-conditioned portions of the building and extra water was available prior to the 1 p.m. dismissal, according to the District 303 news release.

Temperatures were expected to reach a high of 90 to 94 degrees in the Chicago area Monday with heat index values between 100 and 110, according to the National Weather Service.
