Kane County Student Photo Contest Opens Late September

Weekly themes for this year's nine-week photography contest include nature, architecture, texture and school spirit.

KANE COUNTY, IL — The Kane County Student Photography Contest is happening again this year, and it's set to kick off Sept. 26.

Open to high school students throughout Kane County, the nine-week contest will run through Nov. 21. A collaborative effort between the Kane County Regional Office of Education and Kane Excellence in Education Partnership, the contest is meant to celebrate and recognize the talent in local art departments.

Here is a look at this year's submission schedule and themes by week:

  • Week 1: September 26 — Nature/Landscape
  • Week 2: October 3 — Architecture
  • Week 3: October 11 — Fall Fun
  • Week 4 October 17 — Sport Photography
  • Week 5: October 24 — Texture
  • Week 6: October 31 — Editorial
  • Week 7: November 7 — School Spirit
  • Week 8: November 14 — Worms Eye or Birds Eye View
  • Week 9: November 21 — Artist’s Choice

Each week, high school art teachers will approve and submit their student's photos into their respective Google Drive folders using the following structure: Photo title, student name, grade, and medium (example: nature_JohnSmith_senior_film). Submissions are due by 3:30 p.m. on the first day of each school week.

The top 10 photos will be selected each week and published on the ROE's website and Facebook page.

To celebrate the annual photography contest, organizers will host the Photo Contest Reception at 6 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Batavia Fine Arts Center, 1250 W. Wilson St. There, the top photo and student photographer will be recognized with an award. The event will also have several donation opportunities to support scholarships, educational activities and next year's photo contest and reception, according to officials.

Teachers interested in participating can contact the Kane ROE at hello@kaneroe.org to have a Google folder set up for the class.
