League Of Women Voters Plans Events For National Voter Registration Day

The League of Women Voters of Central Kane County (lwvckcil.com) announced that there are National Voter Registration Day and Constitution Day events planned with Oswego East High School and Waubonsee Community College.

National Voter Registration Day, which falls on September 15th, is an annual nonpartisan civic holiday that brings together private, public, and nonprofit partners to register hundreds of thousands of voters. Since its launch in 2012, the campaign has registered over 6.5 million voters. The League of Women Voters is a proud NVRD partner with a long history of hosting special voter registration drives in recognition of the holiday.

Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787, recognizing all who are born in the U.S. or who, by naturalization, have become citizens.

Eligible students at Oswego East High School will have the opportunity to register to vote during their lunch periods on Tuesday, September 15th. According to Patti Lackman, “Young people have the opportunity to make a real difference in their communities by exercising their right to vote. We have been registering students at Oswego East High School as far back as 2008. Some students might not realize that they can register to vote at the age of 17, as long as they will reach the age of 18 before the General Election in November.”

The League of Women Voters has two student engagement events planned in September with Waubonsee Community College. This week, the League will be participating in the WCC Engagement Fair at the Sugar Grove campus on September 9th. Then on September 17th, timed to coincide with Constitution Day, voter registrars from the League of Women Voters of Central Kane County will partner with the Quad County Urban League to assist WCC students with voter registration.

Kelly Rotella shared, “We feel like there’s no better way to start off the school year than to have a voter check-up. We can help students check their registration status, change their address, or register for the first time.”

As Election Day approaches, more detailed information about candidates will be available at vote411.org/illinois.
