Lock Your Cars, Remove Valuables: Geneva Police

A string of car burglaries over the weekend prompted Geneva police to release another warning about locking car doors.

GENEVA, IL — Geneva police are reminding residents to lock their cars after several car burglaries over the weekend. The city website says police are "once again urging" residents to lock their cars.

The Fisher Farms and Pepper Valley subdivisions are where the latest victims were, as valuables were reported missing. One incident resulted in a car being stolen, later to be recovered in Chicago. Police "took a proactive measure" in November, alerting residents of the dangers of leaving car doors unlocked after similar crimes occurred in the area.

Police released these tips for keeping your car, and valuables within, safe from burglars:

  • Lock your vehicle at night
  • Remove any valuables (computers, devices, purses, keys, etc.)
  • Close and lock your garage door
  • Ensure windows are shut
  • If possible, use outdoor lighting to deter thieves

Police ask that people report all suspicious activity immediately, as the information could be used to solve a crime.

"The majority of car burglaries are crimes of opportunity and are preventable. The Police Department would like to thank the community for working together to keep Geneva a safe place to live," the town website said.
