Patient Suing Delnor Over Hostage Situation
A patient who was left unaware of what was happening during a hostage situation claims she now suffers from PTSD.

GENEVA, IL -- A patient at Delnor Hospital is claiming she now suffers from post-traumatic disorder after an inmate held two nurses hostage while she was receiving treatment there this past May, the Daily Herald reports. Victoria Weiland filed a lawsuit this past week in federal court against Kane County, Kane County jail guard Shawn Loomis and Apex3 Security LLC. She says she was a patient on the third floor of the hospital when an inmate, Tywon Salters, was left unshackled and escaped.
One of the nurses that was held hostage on May 8 was beaten, tortured and raped, a lawyer for the nurse said earlier this year. Attorney Sean Murray said corrections staff responsible for guarding Tywon Salters, 21, fell asleep on the job, left him unshackled for long periods of time and were often seen watching TV or on their phones while on duty at the hospital. Murray got away and took two different nurses hostage.
Salters, 21, was shot that same day when the Kane County SWAT team rushed the hospital.

The suit says Weiland heard screams from people she believed to be nurses, but the hospital did not provide any information to her, the suit says, and her room did not have a window, so she could not see what was happening outside. When she called 911, the suit says, Weiland was told to stay in her room. Nobody came in the room for an hour, according to the suit.
Weiland claims she now suffers from PTSD, the Aurora Beacon-News reports. She says she was been too afraid to return to any medical facility for treatment of an unrelated medical condition.
Among its many allegations, Weiland's complaint states the actions of Kane County correctional officer Shawn Loomis put the patient in danger and deprived her of due process rights; Kane County may be liable as Loomis' employer; and Apex3 and Delnor violated their duties by failing to ensure proper procedures were followed and a security plan was in place for Salters, and by not properly warning patients Salters had escaped and was armed, the lawsuit states.
