Police Agencies Increase Patrols This Weekend
It's Super Bowl weekend and area police agencies will be out in full force.

Several area police departments will be conducting special patrols and increasing enforcement efforts over the upcoming Super Bowl weekend. The purpose of the patrols is to keep drunken drivers off area roadways and make sure motorists are following traffic laws with the hopes of preventing any crashes or fatalities. Illinois State Police will be out statewide enforcing the "fatal four" violations, which include: driving while under the influence, speeding, distracted driving and seat belt compliance, according to a post on the Illinois State Police Facebook page.
Last year, state police troopers made over 60 DUI arrests across the state and issued 2,3000 citations. The citations included 760 speeding tickets, 320 seatbelt violations and 160 alcohol-related citations, according to the Illinois State Police.
During the 2018 Super Bowl weekend, troopers also investigated three alcohol-related crashes and one fatal traffic crash.

“Traditionally, we see an increase in those getting behind the wheel intoxicated following the Super Bowl," Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg said in a news release. "It is very important we all work together to keep drunk drivers off our roads. All it takes is a game plan. Before you go to the party, make a plan for a safe ride home.”
Many local police departments have announced special patrols for the Super Bowl weekend. Among the local agencies planning to increase the number of officers on the road are: the Lake County Sheriff's Office, Crystal Lake Police Department, Lake in the Hills Police Department, Buffalo Grove Police Department and Elgin Police Department

So, plan ahead if you plan to drink while out at Super Bowl parties, police said.
“We want the community to enjoy the Super Bowl game and festivities, but to do so
responsibly. All it takes is a game plan. Before you go to a party or gathering, decide if
you’re drinking or driving – do not do both,” said Buffalo Grove Traffic Sergeant Michelle Kondrat in a news release.
And if you see someone driving who appears to be impaired, call 911, if you’re able to do so safely, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office news release.
The Crystal Lake Police Department provides these additional tips to help keep yourself and others safe:
- Call a taxi, use mass transit, or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely
- Report impaired drivers to law enforcement;
- Spend the night where the activity is being held and sleep it off;
- Always buckle up
