Seniors Are Recognized; Soccer Team Earns Victory Over Elgin

Vikings enjoy Senior Recognition Night, and for good measure defeat Elgin 3-0.

Members of the Geneva boys soccer team had a big night for two reasons: They defeated UEC opponent Elgin High School 3-0 to rack up another conference win, and they celebrated Senior Recognition Night at halftime.

Andrew Walton, Matt Kimmel, Mike Henricksen, Brian Ruane, Seamus Kaminski, Brady Wahl, Craig Hancock, Tyler Filipiak, Matt Dashner, Robbie Johnson and Carlos Gonzalez were all recognized for outstanding performance as players and students at Geneva High School.

Parents accompanied players on the field during the halftime break. Coach Ryan Estabrook shook hands with all, and they were awarded with individual gifts.

"Our seniors have done a wonderful job this year," Estabrook said. "They will be missed next season."

And, although senior recognition was among the highlights of the evening's events, it certainly helped that Geneva took a victory over Elgin.

The first half started slow as they score was 0-0 with about 9 minutes left until halftime. Senior Mike Henricksen scored with 8 minutes left to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.

With the excitement of the first goal still whispering through the crowd, Kyle Hurley set up Kevin Higgins with a beautiful assist to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.

Sophomore Joshua Poythress scored one more goal in the second half to seal the 3-0 victory.

Goalie Steven Soderstrom earned the shutout and kept the Vikings in the running for the conference championship.

The Vikings are now 10-8-1 with a 4-2 record in the UEC River Division conference.
