St. Peter Cross Country Begins 2015 Season

With only three returning eighth graders, the team is poised for success with a talented group of young runners.

The Tri County Conference cross country teams are running faster every year. St. Peter Rocket Cross Country is ready for the challenge as the 2015 gets underway on Tuesday. They’ve been practicing hard during the month of August in anticipation of defending their 2014 first place finish in the 7/8th grade division. They also have their sights set on reclaiming the top spot in the 5/6th grade category. Both goals will be demanding but after last Wednesday’s successful intrasquad meet they seem more attainable than ever.

The team returns with eighth grader Aaron Beck, a onetime mid pack runner who is now leading the way for the boys team. Along with eighth grader Andrew Caskey and a solid group of seventh grade boys, the team has the potential to come out on top in the conference and compete for a state qualifying top three finish at the IESA Sectional in October.

Seventh graders Mary Tork and newcomer Kaitlin Zucco are looking strong for the girls. Once eighth grader Isabelle Koester heals from an early season injury they are sure to be a formidable trio. The girls team also has nine fifth grade girls with many showing excellent potential in the early season practices. They are right in the mix with the three returning sixth graders and are sure to raise some eyebrows once the competitions begin. Despite such a young group the St. Peter girls are predicted to finish well ahead of their eighth place finish at last year’s IESA Sectional.

It hasn’t been all work and no play for the St. Peter Cross Country team. In August they completed a “destination run” to Forever Yogurt in Geneva, had a relay race party complete with ice cream floats and a team water fight, and celebrated the end of their summer training with ice cream sundaes at Wheeler Park.

The team returns to competition this Tuesday as they host the first Tri County Conference cross country meet of the season at their home field Wheeler Park. All competitors and spectators will pay an admission fee of one food pantry item to support the St. Peter Food Pantry as they head into their fall season.
