St. Peter To Defend Conference Title Thursday

The 7/8th grade cross country team has a new challenge as St. Mary threw in a wildcard in Sycamore on Wednesday.

It looked like a good win for the St. Peter Rockets 7/8th grade cross country team. That is until host St. Mary of Sycamore put a fifth grader into the 7/8th grade race. The move gave St. Mary it’s first win of the season. With the Ruetten twins placing first and second, the newcomer placed seventh and gave the St. Mary team a decisive win over St. Peter by a score of 35-49. Should St. Mary make the same move for the conference championship meet, the Rockets will have their work cut out for them. It is a situation that the team will be forced to deal with for the IESA Sectional Meet on October 10 as both St. Mary and St. Peter are in IESA Sectional A. With just a few seconds more effort from each of St. Peter’s scoring runners the Rockets will be in contention to top St. Mary and claim the conference title.

The 5/6th grade team had an historic team effort at the meet. The super competitive girls placed 9th - 13th overall (3rd - 8th among the girls) with only 15 seconds between the first and fifth runner to cross the finish. While they placed third overall with the co-ed scoring system, the team cohesiveness will serve them well at the upcoming Fred Martin Invitational as well as IESA Sectionals.

The Tri-County Cross Country Conference Championship Meet will be held Thursday afternoon at Leroy Oaks Forest Preserve. The host school is St. Patrick. The 7/8th grade team will be looking to defend their 2014 first place finish. The 5th and 6th graders have a good chance at a 3rd place trophy and is expected to bring home many all conference individual medals.
