Vikings Boys Golf Coach Excited About New Conference

Geneva golf team looks forward to UEC competition and rivalry with St. Charles East. The Vikings face the Saints at St. Charles Country Club on Sept. 22.

The Geneva boys golf team, along with the rest of the Vikings' sports outfits, are beginning play in the first-year Upstate Eight Conference River Division.

The Vikings moved to the already existing Upstate Eight Conference, which split into two division with this year's addition of Geneva, Batavia and Metea Valley high schools

"I think it is awesome," said Geneva coach Bill Koehn. "Getting to play great competition is a great feeling for me as a coach, and I think the kids feel it, too."

Koehn said in addition to the jump up in competition, the new conference will allow the Vikings to rekindle some old border rivalries.

"We always have had a Batavia-Geneva rivalry, and that will remain," he said. "Now with St. Charles East and North in our conference, that rivalry is going to come back. Some great rivalries can be developed."

Koehn said he already is looking forward to traveling to St. Charles Country Club Sept. 22, for the Vikings' dual with St. Charles East.

"They might be the team to beat this year," he said. "We have beaten them in a couple tournaments this year, they have beaten us in a couple. It has been back and forth.

"I am hoping we will both undefeated going into that match. We have a lot of depth. We have six, seven players who can consistently shoot 1- or 2-over par. On different days somebody different will step up."

The Vikings will host the regional later this year.

"The goal is to get out of our own regional," he said. "If you do that, you just take it one tournament at a time at that point."
